Design Process: Quality of Life Logo

Logo design process for a new OU Graduate College initiative/program that focuses on the overall quality of life of the OU graduate student community.

The Quality of Life initiative is a three phase project that is currently assessing how OU programs meet the needs of graduate students.

The logo was designed to encompass all three letters of the Quality of Life acronym (QoL), while reading as a single letter.

Sooner Magic

I just had to post about this because its another one of those silly, fun projects that I love to do because I don't have to think too much about it and just play!

The OU Homecoming parade is coming up on October 16th and each year the Graduate College participates. And each year we keep getting more clever with our ideas. This year the theme is "Sooner Magic" so we decided to play on the magic theme by paying homage to The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour. If you are unfamiliar or simply need to jolt your memory, check out this video.

If you can imagine, we’re creating the Magical Mystery Tour Bus out of foam core. The bus will have two sides and a front. Inside the two side panels of the bus will be handles so that as we march, we can hold on to the handles and it will look like we are riding inside the tour bus. For a visual illustration, check out the image below. We’ve also created a banner to precede the Magical Mystery Tour Bus, pictured below, as well.

Design Thinkers 2010

I really wish I could go to this conference but the timing is off. Maybe next year! But in the meantime, I can at least feel comfort in knowing that others will be there discussing this:

"Design thinking has never been more important. Technology has democratized design, putting the power to create in the hands of everyone. But design is about more than creation. 'Design Thinking' will not be replaced by technology. And it is what will keep this profession relevant and valued. "

Amen to this and to thinking like a designer!

Pop-Start Box Design

This was a super fun project I thought I'd post for...well, fun.
A colleague approached me with an idea to create a mock Pop-Tart box for one of the many activities during the beginning of the semester Graduate Student Welcome Week. My colleague cleverly came up with "Pop-Start" as the name for the event as students "Pop-Start" their semester with two mornings full of free pop-tarts, juice and water on campus.
A bit about the design:
The mock Pop-Tart box will be printed as a 20"x30" sandwich board that will be worn by a staff member (not me!) during the event.
For those not familiar,"Boomerberry" is a play off of the University of Oklahoma's fight song, "Boomer Sooner."
All of the elements of the box design are original, with the exception of the "Pop-Start" lettering. For that, I photographed an actual Pop-Tart box and photoshopped the "s" at the end of "tarts" and moved it to the front to create the word "start".
Even the pop-tart photo is original. We had another colleague carefully gnaw off the end of a strawberry pop-tart so we could photograph it ourselves.
